Gergely Zimanyi Advisory Board Member
Dr. Zimanyi has been a professor of physics at the University of California of Davis since 1989. After studying superconductors for about 15 years, he transitioned into Energy Science. In one of his projects, he is developing a “Full Spectrum Boost” for solar cells, to enhance their energy conversion efficiency across the entire solar spectrum. In another project, he is pioneering an integrated solar-energy driven water desalination system, where he has pending patent applications. This research is particularly timely given the deepening water crisis across the globe and the profound drought in California. Finally, since 2009 he has been working with Toyota to improve the magnets in the electric motor of the Prius hybrid vehicle. Dr. Zimanyi’s research also attracted attention outside academia. For example, the California Energy Commission asked him to be the founding director of the California Solar Collaborative, to advise the Energy Commission on solar technologies and on optimizing the state’s strategy for spreading solar energy conversion systems.
Dr. Zimanyi has also been practicing intellectual property law since 2001. He started out by working with a medium size law firm specializing on patent prosecution, then shifted his practice to the patent department of a large global law firm. In 2009 he entered the startup world with the first company that created and marketed an ophthalmic femtosecond laser for cataract surgery. The company was later acquired by a global health care company, where Dr. Zimanyi has continued his intellectual property practice since.
